Add page numbers writes a number on every page of a PDF. You pick where it goes from six positions, choose a format such as 1, 1 / 12 or - 1 -, and set its size and colour. Pages are not turned into pictures; the numbers are added on top of the existing pages.
It helps people handing in theses and assignments, tidying up a scanned report without numbers, or numbering a tender or application file in order. The file is processed in your browser and does not leave your device.
How to use
- Drop the PDF in the area or open it with Choose PDF. A page shows in the preview and you can look at other pages with Previous page and Next page.
- Under Position choose one of six places: Top left, Top centre, Top right, Bottom left, Bottom centre or Bottom right.
- For Format pick 1, 1 / the last page number, or - 1 -. The First number box sets what number the count starts from.
- If the cover shouldn't get a number, turn on Skip the first page. The Size and Margin sliders set the text size and distance from the page edge, and Colour changes the number's colour. The preview updates with every change.
- When it looks right, press Download and the finished PDF is saved to your device.
When it helps
University theses usually want the cover and contents pages unnumbered and the main text starting at 1. Turn on Skip the first page, and if the cover shouldn't count, set First number to 0 so the second page becomes 1. For a document where the page count matters, like a tender file, the 1 / 12 format shows both position and total.
A common sequence is to gather several documents into one file with the merge tool and then number it.
Tips
- A skipped cover page still counts, so the next page is 2. To make it 1, set First number to 0.
- Margin runs from 12 to 120 pt and size from 8 to 36 pt. If you will print the file, don't leave the margin so small that a printer may cut the number off.
- On a dark background, change the colour to a light tone so the number stays visible.
- Locked or protected PDFs can't be edited. Remove the protection and try again.
- Your position, format, size, margin and colour choices are remembered in your browser for next time, but First number and the skip setting are not.
