EXIF remover

Drop photos here

JPG, PNG or WebP, up to 50 files. Files stay on this device.

The EXIF remover clears the information hidden inside photos. A photo taken with a phone can store the place and date it was taken, the phone model and sometimes a serial number. It is for anyone who wants to remove these before sharing a photo online.

First you see what is in the file, then you download a cleaned copy. The photo never leaves your device, since the work happens in the browser.

How to use

  1. Drop the photos on the page or use the Choose photos button. JPG, PNG and WebP are accepted, up to 50 files.
  2. In each photo's Details you see the stored fields such as Camera, Lens, Date taken, Exposure, Aperture, ISO, Focal length, Software and Location. If a location exists, Open map shows where it was taken.
  3. If there is no metadata it says No metadata found. Otherwise it shows how many fields will be removed, and mentions location when it is included.
  4. Download the cleaned photo with Save. With several files use Download all. The file name gets -clean added.
  5. Remove takes out a file you added by mistake, and Clear empties the list to start again.
  6. If you add a HEIC photo you get a warning, because it has to be converted to JPG first.

When it helps

A photo you take for a second-hand sale or a flat rental listing may reveal where you live. Removing EXIF before you post it prevents that. The same goes for photos shared on social media or forums.

Journalists, photographers and lawyers also clean files to protect sources. And if you are just curious who took a photo, with which phone and when, the details section shows it at a glance.

Tips

  • Metadata is taken out of the file without re-encoding the picture. Pixels, quality and colour profile stay as they are.
  • If a photo was saved sideways, a small orientation tag is kept so that it does not display rotated.
  • The original file is never touched. The cleaned copy is saved separately with -clean added to its name.
  • Messaging apps and social networks strip some data on their own, but do not count on it. Send a file you cleaned yourself.
  • You can check a cleaned file once through the Location row in the details. The GPS data will no longer be there.

Questions

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The metadata is read and removed in your browser, and the photo never leaves your device.

Does removing EXIF data change the picture?

No. The metadata is cut out of the file without decoding or re-encoding the image, so the pixels, the quality and the colour profile stay exactly the same. If a photo is stored rotated, a tiny orientation tag is kept so it does not turn sideways.

How do I remove the location from a photo?

Add the photo and check the Location row in its details. The cleaned copy has no GPS data, and no other EXIF data either. It is saved with "-clean" added to its name.

Which file types work?

JPG, PNG and WebP. HEIC photos from an iPhone have to be converted to JPG first.
