This tool blurs, pixelates or covers selected parts of a photo with a solid box. You use it when you do not want others to see an address in a screenshot, a face in a photo, or an ID or licence plate number in a document.
The picture never leaves your device, because the editing happens in the browser. Not having to upload a sensitive image to a website is the main advantage of a tool like this.
How to use
- Drop the image on the page or open it with the Choose image button. JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC work.
- Drag a rectangle over the part you want to hide, with the mouse or a finger. You can add as many areas as you need.
- Under Effect pick Pixelate, Blur or Box. Pixelate shows a Block size setting, Blur shows Strength, and Box lets you choose a Colour.
- Click an area to change it. Arrow keys move the selected area by 1 pixel, and Shift makes it 10. The delete area button or the Delete key removes it.
- To blur the whole picture at once, use the Whole image button.
- When you are happy with the result, save the new file with the download button.
When it helps
If you sell something online and a licence plate or a door number shows in the listing photo, you can cover it. When you share a screenshot for a complaint, your own name, IBAN or order details can be hidden the same way.
Covering fields such as an ID number, a signature or an address before you pass a document on is another common job. The same tool also lets you blur someone's face before you post a photo on social media.
Tips
- For text, numbers and ID details use the Box effect. Pixelated or blurred text can sometimes be guessed.
- The original file is not changed, you download a new one. Because the photo is re-encoded, EXIF data such as location is removed and colours are converted to sRGB.
- Open the downloaded file once before sharing it and check that everything you wanted hidden is covered.
- One wide area is sometimes cleaner than several small areas drawn close together.
- Very large photos can be slow to process. Shrink them first if needed.
