Drop an image here

JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC. Files stay on this device.

The crop tool keeps the part of a photo you want and discards the rest. People use it to frame a face for a profile picture, trim useless edges off a screenshot, or bring a listing image to a set ratio. It opens JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC.

The work happens in your browser and the image never leaves your device. Rotating and flipping are available on the same screen.

How to use

  1. Drop the image on the page or open it with the Choose image button.
  2. Under Shape pick Free, 1:1, 4:5, 3:4, 4:3, 16:9, 9:16, 3:2 or Circle. Anything other than Free keeps the ratio fixed.
  3. Drag the crop area to move it, and use the handles on the edges and corners to resize it. Arrow keys nudge the box by 1 pixel, and Shift makes it 10.
  4. Width and Height show the pixel size of the crop box. If the picture is the wrong way round, use the rotate left and right and flip horizontal and vertical buttons under Turn and flip.
  5. When the box sits where you want it, press the download button.
  6. Use Open to switch to another image, or Clear to start over.

When it helps

Many application forms ask for a photo in a particular ratio such as 4:3 or 1:1. There is a separate passport photo tool, but for a plain square or landscape crop this one is enough. Instagram uses 4:5, a YouTube cover uses 16:9, and stories use 9:16.

Trimming the table off the edge of a phone photo of a document, taking only the relevant part of a screenshot, or preparing a round profile picture are common jobs. The Circle option produces a PNG with a transparent outside.

Tips

  • Circle crops are saved as PNG with a transparent outside. JPG cannot hold transparency, so that option never gives a JPG.
  • Pixels inside the box are taken at full resolution. Cropping does not shrink the image, it only selects an area.
  • JPG and WebP are re-encoded at quality 92, so EXIF data such as location is removed and colours are converted to sRGB.
  • If you need a particular pixel size after cropping, go to the image resize tool.
  • For very large images beyond what the browser can produce, the page tells you the file will be saved at a smaller size.

Questions

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The photo is cropped in your browser and never leaves your device.

How do I crop to an exact size?

The width and height under the picture show the size of the crop box in pixels, and the original resolution is kept. Pick a ratio to lock the shape, then drag the handles or use the arrow keys, or use Resize image afterwards.

Why is a circle crop saved as PNG?

JPG cannot store transparency. A circle crop is saved as a PNG with a transparent outside.

Does cropping lower the quality?

The pixels inside the box are copied at full resolution. JPG and WebP are re-encoded at quality 92, so EXIF data such as the location is dropped and colours are converted to sRGB.
