The MP3 cutter lets you pick a section of an audio file and download it as a separate file. It was made for jobs like taking the chorus of a song, pulling one talk out of a long recording, or preparing a ringtone for your phone. It opens MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, FLAC and the sound of an MP4 video.
Nothing is uploaded. The cutting happens in your browser and the audio never leaves your device, which is a relief when you work with private recordings.
How to use
- Drop the audio file on the page or find it with the Choose file button. The waveform appears on screen.
- Drag the Start and End handles to select the part you want, or type the times into the Start and End fields. Arrow keys move a handle by 0.1 seconds, and Shift makes it 1 second.
- Listen to the selection with Play. Last 3 s lets you check how the cut ends, and Loop repeats the same piece.
- For a ringtone, press the 30 s or 40 s button under Ringtone. The tool sets the selection to that length and adds a 0.5 second fade in and out.
- Optionally use Fade in, Fade out and Volume. Pick MP3 or WAV under Format.
- Press the download button, which reads Download MP3 or Download WAV depending on the format.
When it helps
The most common use is a ringtone. You cut a 30 second piece of a song you like and save it to your phone. Setting it as a ringtone is easy on Android, while on an iPhone you should read the answers in the questions section.
It also helps to separate the important part of a lecture or meeting recording, to make a short intro clip for a podcast, to take the sound out of a video, or to trim silence off the start and end of an audio file.
Tips
- If you add a fade or change the volume, the result is saved as WAV. Without effects an MP3 is copied without re-encoding.
- MP3 cuts snap to steps of about 26 milliseconds. If you need a very precise cut, use WAV.
- Files longer than 30 minutes use a lot of memory and can be slow or fail to open on a phone.
- Raising the volume too far clips the loudest parts and distorts them. The page warns you when that happens.
- Keep a copy of the original before cutting an important recording. The tool never changes it, but you may download the wrong section.
